Your Energy Givers vs. Energy Takers (...and how to know the difference)

+ a journaling prompt for you

My loves!! It’s the start of a fresh new week!! 🫂 🪄

Looking back on years ago when I had uncontrollable anxiety and thought loops, one of the huge reasons (maybe even the main reason) is that I did not protect, nor understand the importance of my energy.

Your energy is your most valuable currency (!!!). You use your energy to purchase:

  • Your beliefs about yourself, others, and the world

  • The emotions and thoughts you experience daily

  • The information that your brain processes and focuses on, which shapes what you notice and attract more of

  • The way you interpret literally everything happening around you at all times

If you’d like the neuroscience perspective on this as well, here it is: your brain is extremely plastic, even well into old age. Neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to change and form new connections) is lifelong.

You can change the physical structure of your brain through your behaviors, thought patterns, and intentions. This is a potent power we all have.

The energy formula is this: Your energy = your focus + your time

and the magical (but also potentially harmful) thing about your energy is wherever you put it, that idea, belief, interpretation, behavior, etc., grows.

Your Energy Givers:

The cool thing about finding out what your energy givers are is that... you don’t need to find anything. Your body already knows what they are, so you just need to listen to what your body is telling you.

Your energy givers are your energy ROIs (return on investments). They leave you feeling energized, inspired, and full of peace, joy, light, clarity, or all of the above.

Those are some of the most common ones. Some others that I’d like to add:

The more you make time for and sink your focus + your time into your energy givers, the more all the little present moments you spend alive on this planet are aligned with your highest self.

Your Energy Takers:

Okay…. let’s get into the reason why most of you are here. 🤭

I’d like to start this section with a VERY important point that I looked over for many years: by trying to make yourself perfect, “healed”, and always focusing on the ways you can improve in and of itself can be an energy taker.

If you are not also balancing your journey with gratitude, opening your heart, doing what you love, and allowing yourself to show up imperfectly, then … you’re kind of missing the point.

I remember when I started this journey, I would wake up every morning at 5:30 am to go to the gym, only let myself eat leaves and chicken, and tried to hate myself into change. Then I wondered why I still had bursts of anxiety and depression. I was out of balance. I was still trying to use the way my life looked to others to validate my worthiness. LOL THAT SHIT DOESN’T WORK.

(me since I literally created a community of thousands of incredible people about how beautiful life can be after deep dark depression pits. Dark & negative moments of our life exist to be ALCHEMIZED. 🪄)

But here are some others that no one really talks about that I think are super important to include:

  • Not being authentic.

  • Not going with your first instinct, especially if you know it’s right.

  • Waiting for external validation for your life to look a particular way before you let yourself be the person you want to be (you need to become that person first, and then all of that other stuff will come. Funny, isn’t it?)

  • Outdated thought patterns and draining beliefs. This work is so important because sometimes we aren’t even conscious of these, since they are so rooted in our self-concept. Some sneaky little ones include:

    • “I am only worthy if ________.”

    • “They don’t like me. I am unloved.”

    • “Their opinion of me dictates my worthiness.”

    • “Their opinion matters.” (Lol. It doesn’t.)

    • “I need to work for love/worthiness.”

  • Not forgiving people.

  • Trying to force yourself or this moment to be any different than how it is, right now. Suffering always comes from not accepting.

  • Trying to force joy or happiness. Joy is who you are at your core. But we need to stay present with heavy beliefs and old thought patterns to release them and evolve.

  • Doing things because you think you “have to.”

Now it’s your turn!!

Taking the extra 7 minutes out of my day to whisk a matcha latte is an energy giver for me, but that could be hell on Earth for someone else.

You need to define your own energy givers and takers.

Here is a free section from my 14-Day Energy Shift workbook with the exact journal prompt. So screenshot, print it out, or write out the prompt and do it on your own piece of paper:

….so…. what now?

After taking the time to listen to the signs your body sends you and doing this journaling prompt, you may feel inclined to 1) get annoyed about how much energy you are sinking into your takers and 2) think of all the ways you can immediately alienate yourself from them. Or at least that’s how I felt years ago when I first did this.

But let me remind you of what I said at the start of this article:

…your brain is extremely plastic, even well into old age. Neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to change and form new connections) is lifelong.

You can change the physical structure of your brain through your behaviors, thought patterns, and intentions. This is a potent power we all have

Remember, you have the potent power of choosing where your energy goes, which dictates what you create and notice more of.

Your life can look exactly the same on paper, but if you make a daily intention of noticing the beautiful, the positive, and what inspires you in your day-to-day already, your internal world can completely shift— and with the power of your intention and focus, that shift can happen fast.

This isn’t to say don’t make changes. Quite the opposite. Please get outside, eat food that fuels you, and choose to spend time with people and consume content that lights you up inside.

HOWEVER! When you prioritize your internal world (and become aware of your INTERNAL energy givers and takers), your entire external world reflects that. Reality is a mirror of your inner beliefs and emotional state. In that way, you realize that any power you gave others for triggering you, getting on your nerves, etc…. it was all due to your focus.

Final thoughts:

With all of this, yes, you can create a life where you no longer feed your triggers, where people don’t get on your nerves as much, where you barely ever stress about the future or get sad about the past… but at the end of the day, we are human. These things are all normal.

It’s how we respond to these triggers and the contrast of life that matters.

That’s the power that you hold.

The recognition of that, every day, is one of my favorite energy givers.

I love you, I love you, I love you!!!

If you want to connect to your higher self or release old emotions from your body, I can help you with that, too.

With love and light now and always,

Emma 🤍🪞
